Thrift Store Lingerie
Michael Dittman They hang there: defeated, deflated like plastic shopping bags blown into trees by the wind. Ageing, frayed bras, their cups still inflated by long absent breasts, huge polyester briefs once white now yellow with age like an old cat’s chin. Worse are the sexy kind: fancy corsets, garter belts, chemises, and sheer nighties. Wreckage – the underwires like the spines of ships spilled on the beach from the storms of unwanted Valentines, or spurned lovers, or nights of passion, planned, hoped for, but never realized. The memory too strong, the pain too close, to be worn next to the skin. But someone, somewhere, while cleaning out their dead mother’s drawer thought, “Maybe someone could use these.” and someone, somewhere will sort them, picking the best. |
