Villanelle
Trevor Conway I’m going to write a villanelle, because I like the sound of the word. A shackled poet is sure to excel. I don’t care if it never sells, is never read or never heard: I’m going to write a villanelle. A poem’s form is its shell held around a chirping bird. A shackled poet is sure to excel. It’ll chime like a bell, and will never be slurred, so I’m going to write a villanelle. Tangled in the rhymer’s spell, sound draws sense from the absurd. A shackled poet is sure to excel. Whisper it – no need to yell (or the people will be deterred): I’m going to write a villanelle. A shackled poet is sure to excel. |
